Thanks to recent changes in Florida prescribing laws, Nurse Practitioners in the state of Florida may prescribe controlled substances starting January 1, 2017.  Effective August 1, 2016, all Florida ARNPs must complete at least 3 hours of CE on safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances for each biennial renewal whether or not the NP plans to submit to the DEA. Conference Objectives

  • Discuss the pharmacology of controlled substances, including benefits, risks, therapeutic regimens and the potential for abuse.
  • Describe appropriate patient assessment for safe and effective treatment with controlled substances, evaluating risks and potential benefits as well as the risk for misuse.
  • Apply proper methods to initiate therapy, modify dose, and discontinue use of controlled substances, applying best practices, including accurate dosing and conversion techniques as well as appropriate discontinuation strategies.
  • Demonstrate accurate knowledge about how to manage ongoing therapy with opioid analgesics, using evidence- based tools while assessing for adverse effects.
  • Employ methods to counsel patients and caregivers about the safe use of controlled substances, including proper storage and disposal.
  • Review/assess general and product-specific drug information concerning ER/LA opioid analgesics, identifying potential adverse effects of ER/LA opioids.

Alan P. Agins, PhD

Alan P. Agins holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. He has held faculty appointments at Brown University Medical School, Northeastern University School of Pharmacy and University of Virginia School of Nursing. Dr Agins has also been adjunct or visiting faculty in nursing programs at a number of other universities across the country. During his tenure at Brown, he received the “Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award” over five consecutive years for his outstanding pharmacology lectures.

As founder and President of PRN Associates, Dr. Agins has lectured nationally to more than 85,000 advanced practice clinicians and allied health professionals over the past 20 years. He is the author of 3 books, presents weekly live CE webinars for pharmacists and NPs through RxSchool.com, has developed a number of education videos for pharmacists nationally as well as an online version of the ER/LA Opioid REMS CE program for  the Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation. Dr. Agins has his own continuing education website, Pharmacology One-on-One, which contains originally produced streaming videos that are engaging and informative.

Jody F. Agins, MSN, RNP, FNP/GNP-BC

Jody F. Agins received her MSN/Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Kansas and is board certified by the ANCC in Family Practice and Gerontology. She is the Founder & Executive Director, and a practicing NP, for Collaborative Medical Provider Group (PLLC), a consortium of private-practice clinicians in Tucson, AZ. Jody is also the Clinical Services Director for Agape Hospice and Palliative Care and is a primary care provider for CareMore Touch, also in Tucson. In addition, she serves as a clinical preceptor for Family and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner students at a number of universities in Arizona. Jody is a nationally invited speaker and is a faculty presenter for the Collaborative on REMS Education programs through the Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation.

Registrations may not be shared.  Children of any age and spouses may not attend sessions.  Audio and video recording of speakers, sessions and/or attendees is strictly prohibited.

Method of Tuition Payment

Personal checks are NOT accepted at the conference. Purchase Orders must be received with registration by the conference date and include the P.O. number, invoice address, tuition, approval signature, contact name, email address and phone number. 

Cancellations

Cancellations must be made by phone or in writing. A $50 processing fee will apply. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received or postmarked on/after October 3, 2016.  However, tuition paid, less the $50 processing fee, may be applied to a future Contemporary Forums conference of equal or greater value. No refunds for "no shows."
