Conference Program

Wednesday, May 4

Preconference A: Women’s Mental Health: The Intersection of Neuroscience and Hormones

It is widely known that menstrual cycle fluctuations can significantly impact a woman's mood, behavior and quality of life over the course of her reproductive years, largely due to reproductive hormonal variations during the course of the menstrual cycle.  These hormonal disturbances often correlate with the symptoms of various psychiatric diagnoses, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.  Understanding these hormonal fluctuations as well as neurobiological and neurochemical factors is essential to safe and efficacious treatment.

This workshop provides the latest developments regarding the neuroscientific-hormonal interface of women's mental health symptoms as well as the various psychopharmacological, conventional and alternative medication treatments.  Case discussions will demonstrate the nuances of assessment, diagnosis, genetics and intervention for women across the reproductive lifespan.

At the conclusion of this Preconference, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the new developments and differences in symptom assessment for women presenting with psychiatric symptoms.
  • Discuss the neurobiological and hormonal contributors to women's mental health conditions as well as other psychiatric conditions compounded by female hormonal changes.
  • Explore choices in psychopharmacologic, conventional and alternative medication interventions for women across the reproductive lifespan.
  • Analyze diagnosis and treatment options in a variety of common case presentations relevant to women across their hormonal lifespan.

Preconference B: Personality Disorders: Navigating the Chaotic Wake

Personality disorders often confront clinicians with clinical dilemmas.  These patients may be seen as “impossible” to work with therapeutically.  Examining how developmental experiences and psychological trauma may shape an individual’s behavior can provide insight into the complexities of treating the patient diagnosed with a personality disorder. Specifically, it is important to understand the extent of their inner turmoil and pain.  Clinical case studies will be used to illustrate the challenges that clinicians face in drawing the line between willful behavior and biologically and developmentally determined vulnerability.

At the conclusion of this Preconference, participants will be able to:

  • Define personality traits and personality disorders as categorized by DSM 5.
  • Describe the behavioral and thought patterns of the Personality Disorders, based on DSM 5 definitions.
  • Identify practical interventions to reduce symptoms of Personality Disorders.
  • List the medications to treat the target symptoms exhibited by each of the Personality Disorders.

RAVE REVIEWS

“I am not tech savvy so I was worried how the webcast would work out – I highly recommend it!  So easy and wonderful not to have to travel!”

“I definitely appreciated the option of attending the webcast. This was the first time I did this and it certainly won't be the last. Very convenient.”

“This is my fourth virtual conference and I am hooked. Your support staff is excellent. Thank you!”

“What a great conference. The speakers were wonderful as was the tech support. I was nervous about the technology part of the webcast but this turned out to be a breeze tech wise. The chat feature was fun and made me feel included. I also saved approximately 1/2 my CME allotment not having to pay for travel -- thanks!
