High Risk Obstetric Nursing Las Vegas, NV • November 11 - 14, 2015

Primary healthcare is often the first, easiest and only contact with medical professionals for individuals with mental and/or behavioral health issues.  Primary care providers may find themselves unprepared to accurately recognize and appropriately manage these patients, or uncomfortable with the interactions required to work towards better outcomes.  The Mental and Behavioral Health Management for Primary Care conference is designed for MDs, NPs, PAs and RNs who would like to enhance their knowledge and effectiveness when working with the mental healthcare needs of patients with chronic or acute illnesses, and the physical needs of patients with mental or behavioral disorders.

Conference Program

Wednesday, November 11

Preconference A: Principles of High Risk and Critical Care Obstetrics

Principles of High Risk and Critical Care Obstetrics

Attend this Preconference to learn the foundation of critical care obstetric nursing, including assessment, hemodynamics, and oxygen transport.  There has been an increase in the number of pregnancies complicated by preexisting medical conditions, increasing the morbidity and mortality rates in the United States. The complexity of obstetric patients seen in today's clinical practice settings necessitates provision of care by RN's with special knowledge and skills in assessment and understanding of hemodynamics and oxygen transport concepts. Understanding these critical concepts will enhance your ability to take care of high risk and critically ill pregnant woman. Whether you are new to critical care obstetrics or need a refresher of basic principles, this is the Preconference for you!

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Review normal physiologic changes in pregnancy.
  • Outline noninvasive and invasive assessment of the pregnant woman.
  • Describe oxygen transport concepts of content, affinity, delivery and consumption.
  • Apply physiology concepts in case studies.

FHR Monitoring – Situations That Place the Patient and Provider at Risk

Obstetrical teams are required to make critical decisions quickly without error. Rapid error free decision-making taxes the ability of even the most experienced clinician to make appropriate decisions that can easily overwhelm the novice provider, resulting in error and patient harm.  In obstetrics and gynecology, 60 percent of significant patient injury and resulting malpractice claims arise from management errors, most of which occur during the course of labor and birth.  These management errors are commonly related to FHR tracing interpretation and management, as well as miscommunication among members of the obstetric team.  Attend this Preconference to improve your critical analysis of FHR!

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Rapidly determine FHR patterns associated with significant fetal acidemia.
  • Identify key collaborative interventions associated with improved neonatal outcomes.
  • Target teamwork failures that place the patient and provider at risk.
