Conference Program

Wednesday, July 26

Preconference A: Cardiology Update: How to Spot the Silent Killer

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.  More than a half million people die of heart disease in the United States every year - that's 1 in every 4 deaths. In 2009, more than half of the deaths due to heart disease were on men, as indicated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  With these high morbidity and mortality levels, it is vital for Primary Care practitioners to stay current with health care guidelines to properly screen, diagnose and treat patients with heart conditions.  In this Preconference, attendees will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge on these topics to effectively develop preventive and therapeutic approaches in their practices.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of heart failure.
  • Define how atrial fibrillation affects patients and how Primary Care healthcare providers can appropriately guide their treatment.
  • Establish safe and effective practices for lipid modification and anticoagulation therapies.

Preconference B: Are We Forgetting Something? A Men’s Health Overview

Men are more likely to smoke, make unhealthy or risky choices and be hospitalized than women. Many of the major health risks that men face, such as cancer and heart disease, can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis through proper screening tests and routine home exams. However, men are less likely than women to do regular doctor checkups and medical care.  Primary Care practitioners must be prepared to diagnose and treat the conditions that affect them and be abreast of updated guidelines in men’s health care.  This Preonference will provide attendees with the opportunity to expand their knowledge to take care the most prevalent conditions in the male patient population.

Objectives:

  • Examine the most prominent conditions that affect the health of men.
  • Determine the best practices and approaches to treat chronic male diseases such as prostate cancer and hypogonadism.
  • Evaluate the occurrence and characteristics of erectile dysfunction and its effect on men’s overall well-being.
