Preconference A: IUD Placement Fundamentals: A Practicum

Patty Cason, MSN, FNP-BC
Michael S. Policar, MD, MPH

This session is a hands-on practicum designed for clinicians who want comprehensive instruction in IUD placement. Preconference C: Taking Your IUD Skills to the Next Level

(1:15 - 5:30 p.m.)

This session provides advanced, evidence based guidance for the clinical management of IUD patients.  This is designed as a stand-alone session for experienced clinicians already performing IUD placements or as "part 2" for participants in the morning practicum session. Discussion begins with patient-centered IUD counseling tips and nuances of informed consent. Following this, successful strategies for dealing with difficult IUD placements will be presented. These include placements in obese patients, patients with fibroids, and traversing the challenging internal os. Pain prevention and management during outpatient procedures, responding to IUD complaints and side effects, and prevention and management of IUD complications will be discussed in detail. An interactive discussion regarding efficient practices for same-day IUD placement, as well as case studies in coding and reimbursement, will close the session.

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Implement improved hand skills during use of a uterine sound in such a way as to minimize perforation risk.
  • Describe a checklist for strategies for removal of an IUD with no visible strings.
  • List 4 possible complications of IUD placement and demonstrate patient-centered language when describing these.
  • Demonstrate prevention of vasovagal syncope.

(1:15 - 5:30 p.m.)

Understanding the normal menstrual cycle provides a basis for developing differential diagnoses and designing the work-up and management of abnormal bleeding patterns. This course will use the modern FIGO terminology and cases to explore office based evaluation of women of different ages who present with secondary amenorrhea or infrequent bleeding and those with heavy menstrual bleeding

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Describe the elements of the normal menstrual cycle involving all elements of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and the endometrium.
  • Apply knowledge of normal endometrial changes to manage unscheduled bleeding with combined oral contraceptives.
  • Develop differential diagnoses, work-up and management strategies for secondary amenorrhea, infrequent bleeding and heavy menstrual bleeding.
