Designed specifically for RN and LPN/LVN faculty, this session provides valuable tips and strategies to help you analyze your NCLEX pass rates and evaluate the various elements that can impact student performance. From identifying at-risk students to implementing proven exam preparation and remediation strategies, you’ll gain essential knowledge for fostering positive outcomes and boosting your program’s NCLEX pass rates.

Critical thinking is vital to your students’ success, both in the classroom and in clinical practice. In this session, we will explore strategies for writing test questions and creating exams that go beyond memorizing facts, to truly challenging students to exercise their critical thinking skills. You’ll learn how to perform item and test analysis to edit or improve exams, as well as guidelines for writing your own critical thinking test items and assessing content validity (both internally and externally).

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze conceptual frameworks related to effective testing.
  • Implement strategies to assess content validity of a curriculum, both internally and externally.
  • Apply five guidelines for developing test items that require critical thinking for student success.

Dr. Janice I. Hooper was inducted into the NCSBN Fellowship of the Institute of Regulatory Excellence in 2012, and serves as Chair of the NCSBN® NCLEX® Examination Committee. She began a nursing career as an ADN graduate from Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri. She holds a BSN, MSN (Nursing of Children), and PhD from St. Louis University. She was a nursing educator in the St. Louis area for over 20 years and served as Interim Dean for the College of Arts & Sciences at Webster University in St. Louis for two years. With her love for lifelong learning, she earned four additional masters degrees while teaching nursing. After a move to Austin, Texas, she joined the Texas Board of Nursing Staff as an Education Consultant in 2002.


Dr. Mary Ellen Smith Glasgow
is Dean and Professor at Duquesne University School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed a fellowship at Bryn Mawr College and HERS, Mid-America Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration and was selected as a 2009 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellow. She has over 70 publications, 135 national and international presentations, and co-authored two books, Role Development for Doctoral Advanced Nursing Practice (2011), the recipient of the 2011 AJN Book of the Year Award, and Legal Issues Confronting Today’s Nursing Faculty: A Case Study Approach (2012), the recipient of the 2012 AJN Book of the Year Award. Dr. Glasgow was elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the National League for Nursing (NLN) Academy of Nursing Education. Recently, she developed the first dual undergraduate Biomedical Engineering and Nursing Program in the country and is well-known for her expertise in online education.

Dr. Susan Sportsman’s rare mixture of educational, clinical, and business expertise has made her a well-known and highly sought-after consultant. Currently the Director of Elsevier Academic Consulting Group, Dr. Sportsman has spent her distinguished career in pursuit of the best education for health professionals. Before entering academia, she worked as a clinician and administrator in several prominent healthcare organizations. Dr. Sportsman held faculty and administration positions in a number of Texas-based universities, most recently serving as Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

  • The conference will be held at the fully-renovated Tropicana Las Vegas – A Doubletree by Hilton, 3801 Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89109. A limited block of rooms is being held for you and your guests at special group rates which will be in effect, based on room availability, from March 8 to March 13, 2016 for those wishing to extend their stay to enjoy area activities or qualify for discount airfares.
  • Rates: $105 single/double.  Rates are per room and subject to prevailing state and local taxes.

Preconference A check-in Thursday, March 10 at 7:00 a.m. and Preconference B check-in is at 12:30 p.m. You must check in to receive your conference materials. The location of the Registration Desk will be listed on the hotel’s event schedule.

MAIN CONFERENCE CHECK-IN

Friday, March 11 from 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. If you attended the Preconference, you do not need to check in again for the Main Conference.

SESSIONS

Begin promptly as listed in the conference brochure and online and are open only to registered participants. Out of consideration to others, infants, children and spouses are not permitted in the meeting rooms or refreshment break areas.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE

Participants will complete online speaker evaluations for each session attended and then an overall evaluation in order to obtain CE credit and print the Certificate of Attendance.   • Developed effective testing and remediation policies.
