The 2013 Psychiatric Nursing Conferences offer a forum for discussion and the exchange of ideas, as well as the opportunity to reinforce your knowledge and take home clinical pearls.

  • The Future of Psychopharmacology: What’s Outside the Box is Inside the Bottle, a Preconference offered in both New Orleans and Philadelphia focusing on the complexities of clinical psychopharmacologic management, including clients with medical co-morbidities, and providing a glimpse at future possibilities.
  • Brief Therapeutic Interventions, a second Preconference offered in New Orleans only, highlighting curative factors and practical therapeutic tips to consider when working with clients within limited timeframes.
  • Access to leaders and experts in the fields of psychiatric-mental health nursing, education and health care policy.
  • Interaction with faculty and colleagues who will help you think through and create action plans for improving the care of people with mental health needs.
  • An excellent opportunity to earn pharmacology credit for gaining or renewing prescriptive authority.
  • The Online CE Library where you can listen to sessions you couldn’t attend, earn additional CE credit for free, and reference important details after the conference.

Conference Program

PRECONFERENCE A

The Future of Psychopharmacology: What’s Outside the Box is Inside the Bottle

Nurse clinicians are increasingly aware of the limitations of our current treatments to address the complex conditions we see in our patients. Despite there being more medications than ever, we continue to struggle with long delays between the start of treatment and the improvement of symptoms, if any. Additionally, we are often called to treat patients who have problems that overlap into multiple clinical areas.
This Preconference will focus on these growing needs with content that addresses the clinical complexities nurses see in daily practice, and future exciting new treatments for mood disorders, utilizing “outside the box” treatments.

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Explain how glutamate receptor antagonists such as ketamine can be used in the treatment of depression.
  • Identify three single agents that may be effective in treating both medical and psychiatric symptoms.
  • Identify three potential medications under study for the treatment of bipolar disorder.
  • Identify two agents used to reduce co-morbid psychiatric symptoms during menopause.

Location

Philadelphia

Birthplace of Liberty, Independence and the American spirit – vibrant with celebrated sites and legendary addresses,  famous venues of art, culture, entertainment, and five-star dining and shopping – the city of “America’s Friendliest People” offers a year-round invitation to enjoyment!

“Philly” is a taste of the old, spiced with the new.  Enjoy the grandeur of the flag-lined Benjamin Franklin Parkway countered by the trendy boutiques and street entertainers of South Street.  The Independence Visitor Center gives you a peek at all there is to do in Philly.  Here you can purchase tickets to all the top attractions.  Feel history come alive at the Independence National Historical Park, home to some of our nation’s most precious monuments, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.  View more than 100 museums and attractions, such as the Betsy Ross House, Franklin Institute, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Academy of Natural Sciences.  Visit the Philadelphia Zoo, the Horticultural Center or enjoy the two outdoor performing arts centers.

When the sun goes down, you will have the privilege of dining in the city which many restaurant connoisseurs rank as number one on the East Coast. Whatever you prefer – fine continental cuisine, classic seafood or a savory offering of prime beef –all await you.  And of course, you couldn’t leave town without sampling the world-famous Philadelphia Cheesesteak Sandwich!  After dinner there are dozens of theaters, nightspots featuring everything from jazz to rock, and the famed Philly Pops, Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Ballet.  You won’t want to miss seeing the spectacular Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the new home of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

The Sheraton Society Hill is situated in America’s most historic square mile.  Located less than four blocks away from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, the hotel is steps away from world-class restaurants and shopping.  Step back to colonial times as you stroll down cobblestone streets and enjoy the neighborhood where some of the most influential people in Philadelphia history lived.  Then relax at one of three restaurants located in the hotel, go for a swim in the indoor heated pool, or join your colleagues for networking and a beverage in the picturesque central atrium.

Wherever you choose to spend your time in this city steeped in history and cultural heritage – shopping, sightseeing, fine dining – you are sure to enjoy every moment of your experience.  To receive more information, contact The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau at (800) 537-7676 or visit the websites at www.pcvb.org and www.gophila.com.

Great conference for discussing information that is personally, as well as professionally compelling. I would recommend it to all psychiatric nurses!”
