The 2013 Psychiatric Nursing Conferences offer a forum for discussion and the exchange of ideas, as well as the opportunity to reinforce your knowledge and take home clinical pearls.

  • The Future of Psychopharmacology: What’s Outside the Box is Inside the Bottle, a Preconference offered in both New Orleans and Philadelphia focusing on the complexities of clinical psychopharmacologic management, including clients with medical co-morbidities, and providing a glimpse at future possibilities.
  • Brief Therapeutic Interventions, a second Preconference offered in New Orleans only, highlighting curative factors and practical therapeutic tips to consider when working with clients within limited timeframes.
  • Access to leaders and experts in the fields of psychiatric-mental health nursing, education and health care policy.
  • Interaction with faculty and colleagues who will help you think through and create action plans for improving the care of people with mental health needs.
  • An excellent opportunity to earn pharmacology credit for gaining or renewing prescriptive authority.
  • The Online CE Library where you can listen to sessions you couldn’t attend, earn additional CE credit for free, and reference important details after the conference.

New Orleans

The soul of New Orleans is thriving!

The birthplace of Jazz and festive home of Mardi Gras, New Orleans provides an exciting, colorful setting for the conference “Psychiatric Nursing.” Stroll through the picturesque French Quarter and view quaint Italian courtyards, sculpted fountains and sprawling Victorian mansions. Venture to Bourbon Street, the historic street at the center of the French Quarter, known for its lively music scene, folklore, mystery, and iconic architecture as well as its famous night life... and SO MUCH MORE!

What Will I Learn?

  • Describe evidence-based therapeutic interventions for selected psychiatric disorders, and increase understanding of “brief intervention” techniques.
  • Investigate the proposed far-reaching changes in the soon-to-be-published DSM-5.
  • Outline the effect of integrated care principles on the team’s approach to the assessment and treatment of psychiatric-mental health clients.
  • Explore innovative therapies and re-visit “older” treatment strategies as options to enhance comprehensive care plans.
  • Advocate for the psychiatric nursing profession, our patients and ourselves.

Conference Program

PRECONFERENCE A

The Future of Psychopharmacology: What’s Outside the Box is Inside the Bottle

Nurse clinicians are increasingly aware of the limitations of our current treatments to address the complex conditions we see in our patients. Despite there being more medications than ever, we continue to struggle with long delays between the start of treatment and the improvement of symptoms, if any. Additionally, we are often called to treat patients who have problems that overlap into multiple clinical areas.
This Preconference will focus on these growing needs with content that addresses the clinical complexities nurses see in daily practice, and future exciting new treatments for mood disorders, utilizing “outside the box” treatments.

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Explain how glutamate receptor antagonists such as ketamine can be used in the treatment of depression.
  • Identify three single agents that may be effective in treating both medical and psychiatric symptoms.
  • Identify three potential medications under study for the treatment of bipolar disorder.
  • Identify two agents used to reduce co-morbid psychiatric symptoms during menopause.

PRECONFERENCE B

Brief Therapeutic Interventions

Compelling evidence suggests that both medications and therapeutic interventions are effective in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The current “state of the science” involves multiple modalities to produce better outcomes than those observed with the use of either psychopharmacology or therapy alone. Psychiatric nurses practicing at all skill levels need to understand how various therapeutic interventions can profoundly influence clients’ ability to cope and change. This Preconference will use the unifying framework developed by Hubble, Duncan and Miller to examine the four common elements that account for much of the improvement seen in clients, regardless of the approach taken. These factors will be examined within the context of motivational enhancement therapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy. These therapies were chosen because of their adaptable use and strong evidence base.

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Define a common framework, elements, and therapeutic factors for brief interventions.
  • Describe basic principles of motivation, acceptance and commitment therapies.
  • Utilize therapeutic factors in motivational enhancement therapy to engage consumers in active change.
  • Explain and operationalize pragmatic uses of therapeutic narrative.
  • Implement mindfulness techniques to combat feelings of depression.

A visit to New Orleans would not be complete without sampling its world-renowned restaurants, serving the Cajun and Creole cuisine that helps define this city’s heritage. Relax any time of the day with a fresh hot beignet and café au lait at Café du Monde.  Enjoy celebrated restaurants including Commander’s Palace, Emeril’s, K-Paul’s, Mother’s, Herbsaint and Palace Café, for a gastronomic treat. Stop by Pat O’Brien’s on Bourbon Street and try their famous libation—the Hurricane!—as you take in the local jazz scene.
