Conference Program

High Acuity Pediatric Patients: Assessment and Management

Caring for high acuity pediatric patients on units outside of an ICU is becoming a common practice in many hospitals across the country. Managing these children, including increased nursing care time, sharp assessment skill utilization, and the knowledge and confidence necessary to appropriately alert the team when there is a change in patient status, presents a complex challenge to the bedside nurse. This Preconference will strengthen your skills and knowledge to more effectively work with these high acuity patients and their families.

This Preconference will enable you to:

  •  Complete a rapid assessment of an acutely ill child and recognize early warning signs   of clinical deterioration.
  •  Implement pro-active interventions in a timely manner, including the appropriate use of the Rapid Response Team.
  •  Recognize how communications, treatment decisions, and family inclusion in the process impact the family’s confidence in and perception of the care their child is receiving.
