The conference is geared toward nursing faculty currently using HESI products from Elsevier, who want to explore and share how to use these products to their greatest potential.

This conference provides faculty with a forum to share their ideas, best practices, and evidence-based projects that demonstrate improved outcomes.

Nurse educators are faced with demands from multiple stakeholders to demonstrate high quality student outcomes, in particular strong NCLEX© pass rates. One external tool for evaluating individual student progress as well as curriculum strengths and weaknesses is HESI testing.

Not all standardized tests and related products are the same, and many variables in implementing standardized testing programs can affect student and program success. This conference covers standardized testing in nursing education and allows faculty to share ideas, best practices, and evidence-based projects related to improving student and program outcomes through the use of HESI products. Join us to learn how to improve and elevate outcomes!

WELCOME – CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
Elevating Outcomes with HESI— Then and Now
Susan Morrison, RN, PhD, FAAN
This brief overview of the history and evolution of HESI exams and products is presented by the nurse educator who founded HESI testing.

Using Evidence in Nursing Education: Novelty or Necessity?
Gloria F. Donnelly, PhD, RN, FAAN, FCPP
Evidence-based nursing education—reality or passing obsession? Can academics who love process and curricular analysis embrace the evidence movement in nursing education?  This presentation will focus on the use of evidence to improve student learning outcomes, clinical learning outcomes and NCLEX and other summative examination results.  From the use of a “take away” session in a didactic course, to collating and correlating the evidence in student practice logs and simulation experiences, to the use of a staged standardized testing plan to monitor progress and prepare for licensing and certification exams – this presentation will describe how evidence, in its varied forms, is driving significant improvement in nursing education.

Strategies to Maximize Test Integrity and Minimize Academic Misconduct
Cheryl M. Smith, EdD, MSN, RN, FNP
Kim Brunnert, PhD
Promoting academic honesty has become increasingly difficult in nursing programs as threats to a program’s integrity, from student cheating, plagiarism, and deception, have become more prevalent.  Confounding the problem is that technological advances have resulted in cheating methods that are more resistant to detection than in past decades. Administrators and educators must address the rampant problems of cheating through authentication and verification of student identities during test administrations. Best practices in online education to reduce cheating and plagiarism, as well as authentication and verification of student identities during an exam administration will be discussed from a faculty/proctor’s perspective. Data forensics, and other methods used to assess the prevalence of cheating in standardized testing across large numbers of students and programs will be discussed by the Director of Psychometrics for HESI. This session provides time for a lively Q and A dialogue focused on achievement of a high level of academic integrity within nursing education.

CONCURRENT SESSION #1
#11 Does Standardized Admission Testing Identify the Cream of the Crop?
Lynn M. Underwood, PhD-c, MSN, RN, GCNS-BC
The viability of a nursing program does not depend on the number of students admitted to the program, but does depend on the number of students who successfully complete the nursing curriculum and the licensure exam.  As with any nursing process, strategic planning for successful outcomes begins with assessment. This session will take a close look at HESI testing as admission selection criteria and as a predictor of future success in the nursing program and on the licensure exam.

#12 Integrating HESI for Program Improvement
Karen Montalto, PhD, RN
Five years ago the programs pass rates were an extremely discouraging 65%. While initiating a complete curriculum revision, intermediate measures had to be taken to assure and immediate increase in pass rates on NCLEX. This session will cover the rapid integration of Case Studies, HESI tests, and HESI Live Review courses. Pass rates and retention have greatly improved. Strategies for rapid change will be included.

CONCURRENT SESSIONS #2
#21 Preparing for HESI Testing – Good Communication is the Key to Success
Mary Gallagher Gordon, MSN, RN, CNE
Nursing educators are challenged to create a computerized testing environment that does not create any problems for students when taking standardized testing. Stakeholders in the process include faculty, students, IT department, and the testing vendor. In our efforts to continually bridge the gap between education and computerized testing, our nursing program developed partnerships to ‘mistake proof’ the process. This presentation will provide background information regarding the strategies, and critical elements inherent in the test administration process. Although we have traveled on this “journey” for some years now, we continue to gain valuable insight, and have made significant progress in our efforts to “mistake-proof” one step at a time. This presentation will also provide an overview of the undergraduate testing experience from a programmatic perspective as well as a frank discussion of the testing experience. Lessons learned and plans for the future will also be shared.

#22 Using HESI to Measure Program Student Learning Outcomes and Meet National Accreditation Standards
Linda Stroup, PhD, RN
Shawn Anderson, MSN, RN
Paul Ballard, EdD
This presentation will provide an overview of the use of HESI exams by one baccalaureate nursing program to evaluate curriculum and meet accreditation standards. Data were analyzed to identify strengths and weakness in individual courses as well as the entire curriculum. The outcome of this project was an improved process to evaluate curriculum and monitor student learning outcomes, and significant improvement in student learning outcome category scores used for accreditation.

CONCURRENT SESSION #3
#31 On the Fast Track … 12 Months to 100% Success
Cheryl A. Tucker, MSN, RN, CNE
Nan Ketcham, MSN, RN
This presentation will describe a 12 month BSN accelerated post baccalaureate programs’ success in progressing to a 100% pass rate for two consecutive years. The rigorous nature of the 12 month BSN accelerated program requires early recognition of student learning needs with the intent of promoting successful student and program outcomes. The HESI Specialty Exams combined with the HESI Exit Exams and targeted remediation supported the success of the accelerated students.

#32 Using HESI Exit Results to Evaluate the Integration of QSEN Competencies
Michelle McClave, MSN, RN
Kim Clevenger, EdD, MSN, RN, BC
This session provides an exemplar for other nursing programs to integrate and evaluate QSEN competencies into a nursing curriculum. QSEN can be incorporated into a curriculum in a variety of ways so data can be used to measure implementation strategies. The results of this work demonstrate that integration throughout the curriculum along with thorough review in the capstone course was most effective in improving student scores.

CONCURRENT SESSION #5
#51 Evaluating Evidence in Curriculum Design: A Prospective Analysis
Rita Wunderlich, PhD, RN, CNE
Evidence-based curricular design is needed to develop competent, well prepared nurses to face the challenges of the health care system. In proposing a curricular change for a capstone course, a reduction in clinical hours was considered. A prospective study was conducted to evaluate the change in clinical hours and the effect on cumulative grade point average, HESI scores, and NCLEX® pass rates. This study provided evidence to support a major change in a curricular design. Attend this session to learn more about using HESI scores to evaluate your curriculum.

#52 Creating Alternate Format Test Items: Why, When and How
Jean Flick, MSN, RN
This session will provide an overview of alternate test item formats with emphasis on creating critical thinking alternate format items. Key principles in writing critical thinking items will be discussed. Examples will be reviewed along with strategies for integrating the use of alternate format items in teaching.

11:30

LUNCH SESSION
Evidence-Based Evaluation: Uses of HESI Data
Susan Sportsman, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN
This presentation provides an opportunity for participants to look beyond anecdotal evidence often used to assess the effectiveness of nursing programs and instead, implement a more evidence-based approach to evaluate program outcomes.  The presentation will use aggregate HESI data to demonstrate how selected NLN/CCNE standards might be used to quantify student or faculty outcomes.  More importantly, the presentation will demonstrate how the data can be used to make systematic decisions to improve student admission and curriculum processes.  In addition, barriers to implementation of this evidence-based approach will be discussed.

Finding the Balance in Testing—Improving
Performance and Setting Consequences
Lisette Barton, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, CNE
Virginia D. Ayars, EdD, MS, RN
This session will cover new research presented by Lisette Barton covering HESI’s predictive validity and the effectiveness of standardized exam testing policy strategies within nursing programs. Additionally, as state boards of nursing are challenged to address questions and concerns from constituents specific to the use of standardized examinations in nursing programs of study, Virginia Ayars offers insights into state board of nursing perspectives on standardized tests (based on a state board member survey). Testing policy recommendations will be discussed by both presenters and the session will include time for Q and A discussion.
