This year's Contraceptive Technology conference promises to be one of the BEST, focusing on some of the most challenging dilemmas you face in your everyday practice.

  • What do you need to know about progestin type and VTE risk in a new pill user?
  • What about a woman with one of those medical conditions where you need to determine whether the benefits really do outweigh the risks?
  • How about those cases of complicated vaginitis; you know, the kind you've treated more than once that keep coming back.
  • Don't forget about breastfeeding women…have you kept on top of the shifting recommendations for their contraceptive choices?

San Francisco

...one of the most fascinating, cosmopolitan and romantic cities in the world.

There is so much to see and do - explore Fisherman's Wharf with the frenetic energy of fishing boats, street performers and artists. Watch the African penguin feeding at the Steinhart Aquarium, the oldest grand municipal aquarium in America.

What Will I Learn?

  • Discuss current research as well as recent and future developments in contraceptive technology.
  • Fine-tune your contraceptive management skills, appropriately incorporating guidelines from the U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria and Selected Practice Guidelines.
  • Evaluate the results of the Contraceptive CHOICE Project in terms of women's experiences with long-acting reversible contraception and its effect on reducing unintended pregnancy at the population level.
  • Examine screening and clinical management of common and complex challenges in women's health and primary care, including STDs, vaginitis, abnormal vaginal bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal pap management, mental health issues, PCOS and others.
  • Discuss the highlights of the Affordable Care Act and their impact on women's reproductive health care and Title X.

Who Should Attend?

  • Physicians
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Nurse-Midwives
  • Registered Nurses
  • Physician Assistants

Conference Program

Preconference A

Sexually Transmitted Infections: Clinical Update

  • What are some practical strategies for incorporating the new gonorrhea recommendations?
  •  How do I handle a positive serum HSV in an asymptomatic woman?
  •  What is the protocol for screening and management for a woman with an abnormal pap test and a negative HPV?
  •  What is a good approach for working with adolescents on STD/HIV prevention?
  •  What should be my approach to patients who say, “I want to be tested for everything”?

Attend this Preconference and find out the answers to these and other questions you have about managing STDs in your clinical practice. Presented in affiliation with the California, Seattle and New England STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers (PTC), and the STD/HIV PTC at Johns Hopkins, this Preconference, now in its 5th year, will address screening and treatment regimens, as well as counseling dilemmas, for a variety of sexually transmitted infections. A case-based approach will help you problem-solve clinical challenges with our expert faculty. This is an interactive opportunity to have your questions answered, so plan to come prepared with difficult cases from your practice setting. If a comprehensive clinical update on STDs is what you need, this is the Preconference for you!

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Focus on incorporating the new recommendations for managing gonorrhea into practice.
  • Detail appropriate screening, management, and counseling imperatives for genital herpes.
  • Develop strategies for working with adolescents for STD/HIV prevention.
  • Discuss current protocols for HPV testing and cervical cancer screening.
  • Through case-based discussion, improve your skills in clinically managing STIs.

You won’t want to miss Golden Gate Park and its gem, the de Young Museum, a state-of-the-art facility that integrates art, architecture and the natural landscape and showcases priceless collections of American art and special exhibitions. The neighborhoods of San Francisco offer a special look at the city’s ethnic identities. Spend some time in Chinatown where fish markets, tea and herb shops and exotic produce stalls spill onto the street, or North Beach, the Italian quarter, where you can join locals at an outdoor café for espresso and pastry or wander in and out of the tempting delis, bakeries and pasta houses. For an amazing view of the city’s landscape, hike up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower.

Your trip to San Francisco would not be complete without a shopping spree and this city offers many opportunities for that! From the delightful boutiques of Union and Chestnut Streets to the designer shops on Union Square, you will not be disappointed.

Evenings in San Francisco are beyond compare as you explore the variety of restaurants, clubs, and theater offerings. San Francisco has a love affair with food and you will find a wide range of cuisines, pricing, and restaurant styles. After dinner, head to trendy SoMa, the “see and be seen” club scene where you can duck into a club too cool to post its name above the door or dance at one of the warehouses reworked to stage live music. Or head back to North Beach and take in Beach Blanket Babylon, the quirky, entertaining and riotously funny musical revue of San Francisco.

Conference headquarters will be the dramatic Hyatt Regency San Francisco, with its impressive 20-story garden atrium lobby and a view from every room. Surrounded by a multitude of shops and restaurants, the hotel is within walking distance of many attractions, including the newly renovated Ferry Building, bustling with a Farmer’s Market, gourmet shops and restaurants. From here historic streetcars amble along the Embarcadero waterfront with spectacular views of the Bay Bridge. Or you can board a ferry for a scenic trip to Sausalito or Tiburon, where the
quaint shops and restaurants are set in Victorian style along the waterfront and the sunsets are magnificent.
The California Street cable car line and Embarcadero BART station are steps from the lobby of the hotel, giving you easy access to all the unique sites and sounds of San Francisco.

Plan to extend your stay and drive one hour north for wine-tasting in the world famous Napa and Sonoma Valley vineyards, or south down the rugged California coast to Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur for spectacular ocean views. For more information about San Francisco and the surrounding areas, visit www.sfvisitor.org.

I can't think of a better conference to get the best and most up-to-date information regarding crucial women's health issues ANYWHERE than at Contraceptive Technology. I have learned new and valuable tools to offer my patients and colleagues! Thank you so much for such superb faculty.
