Overview

The future is now! Healthcare in general is facing fundamental changes requiring new conceptual frameworks, updated guidelines, and adherence to changing regulations. Psychiatric nursing in particular is examining the implications for mental healthcare of the internet and social media, integrated models of care and incorporation of recovery principles into daily practice.

We invite you to the 2012 Psychiatric Nursing Conferences to increase your awareness and broaden your understanding of these far-reaching issues. In addition, our expert faculty will address the current realities of providing the best possible evidence-based care for our clients. Though we recognize the challenges we face, both now and in the future, we should also recognize the opportunities that meeting these challenges will provide.

Highlights of the conferences include:

  • Psychopharmacology: Learning from the Past, Creating the Future, a Preconference offered in both Philadelphia and Las Vegas addressing issues ranging from reevaluating "old" medications to new drugs of abuse.
  • Las Vegas only! Recovery is Real: Principles, Challenges and Tools to Make It Happen, a second Preconference offering insights into both theory and practice in a recovery-oriented mental healthcare system.
  • New perspectives gained through dynamic interaction with our expert faculty as well as your colleagues from diverse practice settings across the country.
  • An opportunity to earn pharmacology credit for gaining or renewing prescriptive authority.
  • Case studies interwoven with didactic content in order to emphasize clinical applications of the material presented.
  • Presentations addressing both the global issues affecting psychiatric nursing as well as daily practice challenges.
  • A chance to relax and recharge in historic Philadelphia!

Conference Program

Wednesday, April 18

Psychopharmacology: Learning from the Past, Creating the Future

Nurse clinicians now have more treatment options than ever to help their patients. As we keep an eye to the future for new and more targeted treatments, it is important to remain knowledgeable about all treatments available to help our patients. The psychopharmacology Preconference will look "back to the future" to examine the evidence for all available medication options. Through dynamic, engaging presentations, experienced nurse clinicians will present both the state-of-the-science and the historical context for challenging areas of practice and how psychopharmacology can be utilized to improve outcomes.

This Preconference will enable you to:

  • Discuss the evidence base comparing older medications to more contemporary agents and use this information to make critical decisions in patient care.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with pharmacologic treatment options for alcohol abuse and dependence.
  • Appreciate the risks and benefits of treating attention deficit disorders with medication.
  • Increase awareness of the availability of and risks associated with the use of synthetic cannabinoids and stimulants.

Location

Known as the birthplace of Liberty, Independence and the American spirit, Philadelphia is a dynamic mix of big city excitement and hometown charm. The City of Brotherly Love offers one-of-a-kind attractions, spectacular sightseeing, a walkable downtown, world-class restaurants, exciting nightlife and the best tax-free clothes shopping on the East Coast – all of which promise to provide an unforgettable experience!

"Philly" is a taste of the old, spiced with the new. Enjoy the grandeur of the flag-lined Benjamin Franklin Parkway countered by the trendy boutiques and street entertainers of South Street. Feel history come alive at the Independence National Historical Park, home to some of our nation's most treasured monuments -- Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell Center for the first time allows visitors to view exhibits and displays focusing on the Bell's origins and its modern-day role as an international icon of freedom. The National Constitution Center explores the United States Constitution through high-tech exhibits, artifacts and interactive displays. View more than 100 museums and attractions, such as the Betsy Ross House, Franklin Institute (home of the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial),the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Academy of Natural Sciences. Visit the Philadelphia Zoo, the Horticultural Center or enjoy The Mann Center for the Performing Arts. For the sports enthusiast, take in a Philadelphia Phillies ball game at the new state-of-the-art Citizens Bank Park.

Extend your visit and journey to Lancaster County, home to one of the oldest and largest Amish communities in America. Or visit Valley Forge, famous for Washington's encampment with his forces in the winter of 1777. Or do some serious shopping at the largest retail mall on the East Coast, The King of Prussia Mall, where you'll find 365 stores and over 40 restaurants.

When the sun goes down, you will have the privilege of dining in the city that many restaurant connoisseurs rank as one of the best on the East Coast. Enjoy a taste of history at the City Tavern, where John Quincy Adams ate in 1774 during the First Continental Congress. Today, it has been meticulously restored, and diners may chat with the colonial-garbed staff and admire the pewter table appointments. Or try Friday Saturday Sunday, a "neighborhood" restaurant serving an eclectic menu that has been a fixture in the Rittenhouse Square area for over 30 years. And of course, you couldn't leave town without sampling a world-famous Philadelphia Cheesesteak Sandwich! After dinner there are dozens of theaters, nightspots featuring everything from jazz to rock, and the famed Philly Pops, Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Ballet. You won't want to miss seeing the spectacular Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the new home of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

The Sheraton Society Hill is situated in America's most historic square mile. Located less than four blocks away from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, the hotel is steps away from world-class restaurants and shopping. Step back to colonial times as you stroll down cobblestone streets and enjoy the neighborhood where some of the most influential people in Philadelphia history lived. Then relax at one of three restaurants located in the hotel, go for a swim in the indoor heated pool, or join your colleagues for networking and a beverage in the picturesque central atrium.

Wherever you choose to spend your time, you are sure to enjoy every moment of your Philadelphia experience.
