Managing the Medically Unstable Pediatric Patient
The phrase "medically unstable" brings to mind a multitude of issues and challenges for pediatric nurses. What patient signs and symptoms are crucial to detect? What clinical changes rapidly shift your pediatric patient to a medically unstable status? When and what should your assessment and interventions include? Learn about management of situations where patients can easily become unstable in this new preconference.
Upon completion you will be able to:
- List steps for assessment of neurologic changes and impending seizures and which medications and nursing interventions are most effective in reducing risk and resolving this situation.
- Outline key controversies in pediatric resuscitation and evidence-based changes in pediatric resuscitation techniques.
- Recognize early symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis and describe the process of management to stabilize the patient.
